Description

A classic Tex-Mex appetizer featuring seven layers of flavorful ingredients including refried beans, guacamole, seasoned sour cream, salsa, cheese, olives, and green onions, served with crispy tortilla chips.

Ingredients

Scale

Layers

  • 16 ounces refried beans
  • 3 ripe avocados (mashed)
  • 1 lime (juiced)
  • salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon taco seasoning
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (shredded, or Mexican blend)
  • ½ cup black olives (sliced)
  • ½ cup green onions (chopped)

To Serve

  • tortilla chips (to serve)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base layer: Spread the refried beans evenly as the first layer in a large serving dish, ideally an 8-inch square glass dish.
  2. Make the guacamole layer: Mash the ripe avocados and mix them with lime juice, salt, and pepper to taste. Spread this mixture over the refried beans layer.
  3. Season the sour cream: Combine the sour cream with taco seasoning thoroughly, then spread this on top of the guacamole layer.
  4. Add salsa layer: Carefully spread the salsa evenly over the seasoned sour cream layer to avoid mixing.
  5. Apply cheese layer: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese or Mexican blend over the salsa layer evenly.
  6. Top with olives and onions: Scatter the sliced black olives followed by chopped green onions over the cheese layer.
  7. Serve: Present the layered dip with tortilla chips for dipping.

Notes

  • Chilling the dip for an hour before serving allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  • For a meatier option, add a layer of cooked, seasoned ground beef or shredded chicken.
  • Experiment with different cheeses like Monterey Jack or pepper jack for varied flavors.
  • Use dairy-free cheese and sour cream substitutes for a dairy-free version.
