Description

Delicious and healthy baked BBQ chicken drumsticks seasoned with a flavorful blend of spices and coated in a sugar-free BBQ sauce. Perfectly crispy and juicy, this recipe is easy to prepare and ideal for a satisfying main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 4 pounds Chicken drumsticks, about 12
  • 2 tablespoons Garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons Onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons Chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons Smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper

Sauce

  • 2 cups Sugar-free BBQ sauce, or low sugar

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken: In a mixing bowl, add drumsticks, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground ginger, salt, and pepper. Using clean hands, generously rub the seasoning all over the drumsticks to coat evenly.
  2. Refrigerate: Place the seasoned drumsticks in the refrigerator and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
  3. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a roasting tin with aluminum foil for easy cleanup if desired.
  4. Arrange the drumsticks: Transfer the drumsticks to the prepared roasting tin, placing them on a wire rack spaced apart to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  5. Bake the drumsticks: Bake in the middle of the oven for 50 minutes, flipping the drumsticks halfway through the cooking time to ensure they cook evenly on all sides.
  6. Apply BBQ sauce: Remove the drumsticks from the oven and brush each one generously with the sugar-free BBQ sauce.
  7. Finish baking with sauce: Return the drumsticks to the oven and bake for 15 minutes, then flip them over, brush with sauce again, and bake for another 15 minutes until the sauce is caramelized and the chicken is cooked through.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Remove from oven and serve the baked BBQ chicken drumsticks immediately while hot for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • The serving size is 2 drumsticks per person.
  • Cooking times may vary depending on the oven; you may need to bake the drumsticks for an additional 15-20 minutes if not fully cooked.
  • You can increase the oven temperature to 400°F for a crispier skin, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Substitutes: Chicken breasts or thighs can be used if preferred.
  • Use any favorite healthy sugar-free or low sugar BBQ sauce to suit your taste.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in microwave before serving.
  • Freeze cooked drumsticks in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months; thaw before reheating.
