Ingredients
Scale
Green Beans
- 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
Sauce
- 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Toppings
- 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray and set aside.
- Cook Green Beans: Place the green beans in a pot of lightly salted boiling water and cook until fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Mix Sauce: Whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper directly in the casserole dish until smooth.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the casserole dish. Stir well to coat the green beans evenly with the sauce.
- Bake Casserole: Place the casserole dish in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the center is bubbly.
- Add Topping and Finish Baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onion strings evenly over the top. Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to crisp up the topping.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve the casserole warm immediately for best taste.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of garlic powder to the mushroom sauce.
- Crispy fried onions can be substituted with homemade fried shallots for a fresher crunch.
- Sharp cheddar cheese adds a nice tang, but you can substitute with mozzarella or Monterey Jack if preferred.
- To make ahead, assemble the casserole and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking.
- If fresh green beans are unavailable, frozen green beans can be used; adjust the boiling time accordingly.
